This article covers connecting an Outlook / Microsoft 365 mailbox to the TimeTonic Email module, to receive and send your emails from your workspace, along with the key point to know for sending. For the general procedure, see How to sync a mailbox with TimeTonic.
Prerequisite. Connecting a mailbox requires two-step authentication. For a Microsoft 365 mailbox, authorisation from your administrator may be required.
Connect your Outlook mailbox
The connection follows the Email module procedure. From your workspace:
1
Add the Emails module
Click Add or import a new table, then select the Emails module.
2
Set the encryption password
Set the password that unlocks the encrypted field. Keep it safe: it protects your account credentials.
3
Fill in your Outlook account
Enter the address and credentials of the Outlook account to link, then choose the authentication method (see below).
Choose the authentication method
The Authentication Method field offers three methods:
Login/Password
You use the account's address and password: classic password authentication.
OAuth2 User
Modern OAuth2 authentication at the user level, without storing a password.
OAuth2 Tenant
Modern OAuth2 authentication at the Microsoft tenant level, managed with your administrator.
For a Microsoft 365 mailbox, if your administrator has disabled password authentication, use an OAuth2 method. Check with your Microsoft administrator to determine the method suited to your organisation.
User feedback. Some users report that sending does not work with OAuth2 Tenant, while OAuth2 User works for the same account. If you run into this, try OAuth2 User.
Sending emails fails without an error message
If receiving your emails works but sending fails, with no error message, the cause is usually a security setting on the Microsoft side, not TimeTonic.
Cause and solution. Microsoft disables SMTP authentication by default on Microsoft 365 mailboxes. To allow sending from TimeTonic, ask your Microsoft administrator to re-enable SMTP authentication for the mailbox. Once enabled, sending works normally.
Another option: switch to an OAuth2 method (see Choose the authentication method), which does not depend on SMTP password authentication.
Anticipating the end of classic SMTP authentication (Microsoft)
Microsoft plans to progressively disable classic SMTP authentication (username and password) on Exchange Online / Microsoft 365, in favour of OAuth2 authentication.
Timeline announced by Microsoft.
-
End of December 2026: classic SMTP authentication will be disabled by default on existing tenants. A temporary manual re-enable by the administrator will remain possible.
- New tenants created after December 2026 will need to use OAuth2 from the start.
- Microsoft will announce the final removal date in the second half of 2027.
The "reactivate SMTP authentication" solution described above is therefore only a temporary bridge. Switching to an OAuth2 method (User or Tenant) now is the durable solution.
